What I have been doing + what I’ve learned during July

Hello my people,

I have been absent from here and struggling to fully live my life “not really living it to the fullest” and dealing with the transition period from being a student to being a medical intern AKA a doctor. I want in this post to talk about how I’m feeling about life and what I have learned during the 1st month of my internship.

The month of July was very long for me, I feel it is endless and longer than a semester!! My days seem fogy in July month and I was not able to keep a record of the days. I tried to take pictures and keep memories for me to look back at them later and remember how my first month of my internship year was.

Another thing that came with the foggy days is being tried all the time, sleep no longer recharges my energy and give me the ability to fully function the next day. Also, coffee and food aren’t options. I wanted to do more with my life and really have a routine, but the 24 hours on-calls I sadly failed to. All the things that I promise myself I will do; I didn’t do them. The only thing that I’ve done during July were: going to work, sleeping, eating.

I am excited that July is over and in August I don’t have the 24 hours on-call, and I will have Eid vacation that will fully recharge me. Don’t get me wrong about July, it was a good month and great start, but it was tiring for me.

Now, let get into what I have learned in July:

  • I am responsible about my patients and their documentation, my resident might not revise my notes and let me fix it. Maybe later on after a period of time I might harm the patient because I failed to write what is important. Also, I do it to protect myself from questioning by any person.

  • If you see all the patient notes, short and messed up, don’t copy it and change the updates. Make a note that represent your name and protect you.

  • Don’t underestimate your ability, when you take a history and do a physical examination, if you notice something say it. It might be something important that another member of the time missed. Say It For Your Patients

  • In July I learned to be comfortable with being alone, and it turned out that I enjoy my alone time in silence and peace.

  • You can easily survive not having your people around, you just have to open yourself to others and interact with them. I’m sure you will find someone that you are going to enjoy their company.

  • When you are kind to others, Allah will bring great people in your way. Great and kind people are blessing that will make your days better. And Allah might bring bad people to let you learn something from them.

  • You have a control over your time in most awaking time of your day, you can make a decision to make a good use of it. Or you can waste to and regret it later on. YOU HAVE THE CHOISE.

  • Post-call you just have to sleep, no questions. Just sleep as much as you can feel less jet-lagged the next day.

After the medical Oath “القسم الطبي” my feelings have changed forever, I have the feeling of responsibility in me. It's just a feeling that I cannot express to you. When I now say “I AM A DOCTOR” it is totally different from before.

Remember that you have studied for years and you can do your job as a medical intern, if you don’t know everyone around you is willing to teach you. You just have to say I want to learn or I don’t know. Do it for your patients to be safe physician.

I hope you enjoyed reading the post

Thank you so much for your time

See you later
