Summer training tips

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you are having a nice time this summer, and enjoying the boredom and the freedom. For me, I had super amazing three weeks of summer training at King Fahad university hospital and sadly I only have one week left.

Throughout these three weeks, I've realized and got reminded of the important tips that we should apply. These tips are not necessarily unique by any mean, but a reminder to better the training experience.

Let start the tips:

1- Define the aim / cause of the summer training

There is not much thing to say about this rather than know the WHY and help you reach the aim or goal by the end of the summer training period.

2- Be professional at all times

This is well known and taught thing for all medical student from day one, but in real life, this is not applied a lot of the time. Come early to the meetings and morning report, introduce yourself every single time and to not bring your coffee and food to clinics / wards. Being a student is not an excuse to use, you are future doctor so you should start ACTING LIKE ONE.

3- Give a task to yourself every day of the training

Each morning try to learn / apply skills, perform procedures or test your information, having a task will help you to gain more during the training period and show how passionate you are about the specialty. Do not hesitate to ask the doctor to teach you or give you a chance.

4- Make yourself comfortable in the place

What I mean by is to talk with the people and be friendly with them. Don't just sit or stand there, do more and offer to help and try to be more social. Usually, this will make you look more confident.

5- Write down the new information that you learn every day

Not just writing down, but researching and making a document that contains all the information. This will make the process of review the information easier when the time of your internship or next summer training comes.

6- Be nice to the nurses

Nurses have years of experience and they can teach you a lot if you treated them very well. They will tell you if there are interseting procedures to perform and maybe do some of the paper work for you. They are so amazing, doctors cannot live without nurses!!
